Chairman and President    Vice President

Dear Virginia Education Policy Leader:

Six Schools. 6,000 Students. $20 million.

On Wednesday November 20, you’re invited to come learn how a mid-sized school division won $20 million in Race to the Top District funds … and how your school division might, too!

With millions of dollars in Race To The Top District (RTTD) funding on the line, you’re invited to hear the story of how the Enlarged City School District of Middletown, NY partnered with Education Elements, a specialist in blended learning, to develop a program providing an innovative, student-controlled learning environment for all students.

Even if you’re not going for a RTTD grant, you’re guaranteed to learn things at this lunch that will make your instructional program even better! The Middletown program allows teachers to opt-in to the difficult work of shifting their instructional practice from a teacher-controlled model to a student-controlled blended model – one that integrates technology fully into instruction to make frequent use of small groups, student performance data to drive instructional decisions, and integrated digital content.

This Education Policy Luncheon will be co-hosted by the Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy and the Lexington Institute, and comes just before the official start of the annual Virginia School Boards Association Convention in Williamsburg, Virginia. Here are the details:

Wednesday November 20, 2013 Noon to 1:45 pm

(just before the official start of the VSBA Convention)

Doubletree by Hilton, Williamsburg

50 Kingsmill Road Williamsburg, VA 23185

$15 per person

Our special luncheon guest is Anthony Kim, CEO and founder of Education Elements, partners with Middletown public schools in securing the school system’s $20 million Race To The Top District grant. A seasoned entrepreneur, Mr. Kim also founded and led Provost Systems, a provider of software and services for operating online schools, where he worked with K-12, post-secondary and Department of Defense institutions to support innovation in instructional delivery and instructional technology. After selling Provost Systems to EdisonLeaming (formerly Edison Schools) in 2008, Mr. Kim served as Executive Vice President of Online at EdisonLeaming until 2010, building out its newly formed online business unit. Mr. Kim graduated from Cornell University and has served as an advisor to several software companies.

We expect leaders from the Enlarged City School District of Middletown, NY to join us in this discussion of how they won $20 million … and how Virginia school systems can compete, too!

The luncheon is only $ 15 per person, and you can register by sending a check, payable to “The Thomas Jefferson Institute” to the address above. Or you can register online by clicking here.

Either way you register, this will be an outstanding presentation offering much food for thought as public education continues to increase the digital options available for students. I hope you’ll make a point of joining us!
