The Reading First Program: Is It Working? -- November 2006

The "Reading Wars" are always controversial, and the federal Reading First program is no different. But often lost in the debate is an answer to the question: "Do these programs work?" Wythe County Public Schools has received Reading First grants for four of its five elementary schools -- and just added the fifth.

This luncheon program -- held during the "lunch on your own" break at the annual Virginia School Boards Association Convention -- will demonstrate how these grants were applied, the issues that aroe in execution of a new reading program, the results from the program, and how local schools can improve reading scores in early grades.

The program includes a presentation by Dr. Roy Monk, Director of Instruction at Wythe County Public Schools; and the preliminary release of a new paper reviewing Reading First results in Virginia.
